CBC History

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

Being led by a vision God had shown to Pastor Charles H. Dixon, on the First Sunday in September 1980 Community Baptist Church held its first service with only one member present. Service was held at Rose Park School in the auditorium.  At the end of the service when the invitation to come to Christ was extended thirty-three people came forth to become a part of Community Baptist Church.  Even though the membership was small the vision and faith kept the church going and growing very strong.  Community stayed at Rose Park for nine months.

God was not finished. He placed another vision with the Pastor to let Community know that it was time to move on to bigger and greater things. As his search began to find a larger church building, it led him to 819 Douglas Avenue South.  The church’s faith and willingness to finish the vision and dream were there but the finances were not. So again God showed up and led Pastor to Mr. Lanotti.  He told Mr. Lanotti he would like to purchase the church, but he did not have the money.  They departed, but God did not.  Mr. Lanotti told Pastor Dixon that he had other bidders with money to pay, but God had told him in a dream to let him have the building. In August of 1981, Community moved to 819 Douglas Avenue.  Service was held in the chapel until the sanctuary could be renovated.

Because God had placed visions and dreams in so many people, on the first Sunday in July 1983, we held the first service in the sanctuary praising and giving thanks to God for the placing of dreams and visions and the showering of blessings on the church and its people. Community remained at this address from 1981-2004.  God placed another vision with Pastor Dixon.  This one told him it was time for Community to move on to greater things and better places.  In March of 2004, Community Baptist Church moved to 3838 Dickerson Road, where God continues placing dreams and visions.

In April of 2006, the Community family lost its founder and Pastor.  Yet, because of God’s plans for Community, we pressed forward.

In March of 2007, God sent to the Community Baptist Church Family, Pastor Vincent C. Johnson, First Lady, Sis. Donella Johnson and family. God has placed a vision in Pastor Johnson that has continued to take Community to a new and different height: providing a Spirit-filled environment where believers can acquire the necessary skills, develop the right attitude, and learn Godly wisdom.  CBC continues to press towards a higher calling (Philippians 3:14) to grow and minister to the needs of God’s people. We have been blessed to minister to the needs of Four Generations of kids, youth, men, women, couples and singles.

As we continue to follow God’s direction, we are determined to become 4G Focused: to do our best to Gather in Worship; encouraging others to Grow in Community; be a chosen steward to Give in Service, and always ready to Glorify God through His Grace.

To God be the Glory, for the things He has done!
